Prof. Stijn Franken
Stijn Franken (1967) studied law in Tilburg. He then obtained his PhD at the university of that city in 1993, to be sworn in as a lawyer in The Hague later that year. He has since focused on legal assistance in criminal matters. In 1998 he became a lawyer in Amsterdam. Since 2003 he has also been a professor of criminal (procedural) law at Utrecht University. He is also a member of the Closed Criminal Affairs Advisory Committee, a board member of the Dutch Lawyers Association and a member of the Association of Cassation Lawyers in Criminal Matters. He has many publications in the field of criminal (procedural) law to his name. In his practice, Stijn focuses on the handling of cassation cases at the Supreme Court of the Netherlands and on (often extensive) criminal cases that are dealt with in the courts and tribunals. In addition, he is regularly asked to provide legal assistance in disciplinary cases. He combines his practice with an appointment as professor of criminal (procedural) law at Utrecht University. He looks for challenges in particularly (legally) complicated cases - in the field of financial-economic criminal law and in the field of so-called common criminal law.
